An exceptional career in immunology and therapeutic chemistry
Emeritus CNRS Research Director in the Biotechnology and Cell Signaling Laboratory and head of the “Neuroimmunology and Peptide Therapy” team, Professor at USIAS, winner of the Silver Medal, the CNRS Innovation Medal, the Robert-Lohr Prize, and Officer of the National Order of the Legion of Honor, Sylviane has collected many honorary titles, and rightly so. Our director is an internationally renowned scientist in the field of immunology, therapeutic chemistry, and autoimmune diseases, to the great pride of the IMS.
This appointment, made official on January 8, 2026, is one of eighteen new scientific figures admitted this year by the Academy in recognition of their exceptional careers and remarkable contributions to biomedical research. A formal ceremony to welcome the new members will be held under the dome of the Institut de France on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, from 3:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Her pioneering work focuses in particular on the development of innovative therapeutic strategies against autoimmune diseases, with a particular emphasis on systemic lupus erythematosus. She is particularly known for her work on a promising peptide treatment, P140, currently in advanced clinical trials.
The selection process for the French Academy of Sciences is rigorous, recognizing scientists whose contributions have made a significant impact in their respective fields. Members are elected for life after a thorough review of their career and the impact of their work. This distinction highlights not only Sylviane Muller’s scientific excellence, but also the influence of the IMS in Strasbourg in the fields of drug sciences and translational research. It further enhances the institute’s visibility and influence at the national and international levels.
An inspiring figure for the scientific community
Sylviane Muller’s appointment to the Academy of Sciences is a source of inspiration for many researchers, particularly female scientists and researchers and students at the IMS. It perfectly illustrates the IMS’s commitment to excellence, innovation, and research in the service of health.
We warmly congratulate Sylviane Muller on this prestigious honor and look forward to the new perspectives she will bring to the IMS and the entire scientific community.
